What is Oud?

If you're a fragrance connoisseur, you'd know that it's a much sought-after immediately recognisable scent. But what is Oud actually? See below.

Oud is one of the most expensive and luxurious fragrant ingredients in the world. It comes from the Agarwood tree and is only found in parts of south-east Asia, such as in Cambodia and Bangladesh. Experts claim only 2% of Agarwood trees produce it, making it rare and expensive. The best of Oud oils is created when the wood becomes infected with a special type of mould called Phialophora parasitica (yes, really!). Though it doesn’t sound too pleasant, it results in one of the most luxurious scents known to man...Oud. The tree reacts to the mould, producing a dark and scented resin, saturating the wood, which can then be separated and used as Oud chips for burning incense. The remaining resinous wood is distilled into Oud/agarwood oil, often referred to as ‘liquid gold;’ which is then used for perfumery. This key ingredient is used in the form of Oud oil or resin, which is often blended in perfume compositions or applied directly on the skin for its opulent aroma.

Oud is admired by perfume connoisseurs for its distinct aroma, which varies depending on factors such as climate, age and origin. Some Ouds are sweet and woody, yet others are smokier.

 

Many of the world’s luxurious fragrances contain Oud as a base note, complemented by other rich ingredients such as Musk, Amber and Cedarwood. Not surprising at all, considering how long-lasting and distinct the scent is, though it is an acquired taste.
